As a clinical dentist and academician, with a genuine interest in the material sciences, I worked extensively with plastic resins. I also had woodworking and wood carving as hobbies. Now in my retirement, I have discovered a unique blend of the two mediums with the creation of vases, sconces and frames. Wood, from fronds of the Palmetto, is the principle component. I procure the fronds myself, and store them outdoors for at least 6 months, in a manner that allows them to age in the elements. Epoxy resin is used to unite the wood in the shape I choose for each piece. The epoxy color and the techniques I employ can be varied in a way that enhances the unique character of each frond. I also vary the illumination of the vases and sconces, which greatly influences the visual aspects of each piece.
